We must all look after our mental health. Every year, one in four of us will experience a mental health problem. And yet hundreds of thousands of people are still struggling. No one should have to face a mental health problem alone.
We work with our partner Mind, to encourage and support you to look after your mental wellbeing and well as your physical health. Mind has a wide range of support on offer.
There are many studies which have shown that being active can improve our mental health. For example, it can help with;
- Better sleep – by making you feel more tired at the end of the day
- Happier moods – by releasing feel-good hormones that make you feel better in yourself and give you more energy
- Managing stress, anxiety or intrusive and racing thoughts – doing something physical releases cortisol which helps us manage stress. It also gives your brain something to focus on and can be a positive coping strategy for difficult times
- Better self-esteem – being more active can make you feel better about yourself as you improve and meet your goals
- Reducing the risk of depression – studies have shown that doing regular physical activity can reduce the likelihood of experiencing a period of depression
- Connecting with people – doing group or team activities can help you meet new and like-minded people, and make new friends.
Your mental wellbeing is about how you’re feeling right now, and how well you can cope with daily life. Our wellbeing can change from moment to moment, day to day, or month to month.
Having good wellbeing can help you to:
- Feel and express a range of emotions
- Have confidence and positive self-esteem
- Have good relationships with others
- Enjoy the world around you
- Cope with stress and adapt when things change.
